Relocating by Force? Embrace the Move With this Checklist

Relocating to a new neighborhood, especially when you’re being forced due to gentrification or redevelopment, can be incredibly stressful. However, remember that you have the resilience and strength to navigate this transition successfully. Although it may not seem like it, you also have choices. You can choose to complain about it, plan to move on your own terms or prepare to make the best of it.  Here’s a relocation checklist to help you and your family make the most of this new chapter:

BEFORE THE MOVE

  • Create a Budget: Take a deep breath and start by planning your moving budget.  Consider packaging, moving trucks and helpers.
  • Research the New Neighborhood: Explore the new area with curiosity. Learn about the schools, healthcare facilities, grocery stores, parks, and all the exciting new opportunities awaiting your family.
  • School Enrollment: You’re giving your children a fresh start. Contact the local school district, gather the required documents, and prepare for the adventure of a new school.
  • Notify Current School: Your kids are resilient, and so are you. Inform their current school about the move, and together, you can ensure a smooth transfer of school records.
  • Packing and Sorting: Packing can be overwhelming but take it one step at a time. Declutter your home, and with each item you let go of, you’re making space for new memories.
  • Change of Address: Notify all necessary parties about your change of address. It’s small step towards a fresh start.
  • Utilities and Services: Contact utility service providers and schedule service connection around the dates you will move in. Some require you be available in person at the home. Others can be done remotely, so ask.

DURING THE MOVE

  • Pack the Essentials:  Pack a moving-day essentials box with items needed even if you don’t unpack when you arrive. It may include water, snacks, night clothes, linen for beds, bath items and medicines.
  • Moving Assistance: Reach out to friends, family, or community organizations for help and resources. You’re not alone in this endeavor.
  • Childcare: Arrange for childcare for little ones. You’re taking steps to ensure your children’s well-being during this transition so let them be a part of it if they are old enough to participate and stay positive. They usually will follow your lead.
  • Utilities and Services: Remember to check your calendar to ensure you don’t miss appointments. Reschedule early as things come up. You’re embracing change, one connection at a time.

AFTER THE MOVE

  • Unpack Strategically: Unpack essentials first, creating a cozy new space for your family.
  • Safety Check: Ensure your new home is safe for your children. Create a safety plan and be sure to have them communicate any safety concerns.
  • Meet Neighbors: Introduce yourself to neighbors with a friendly smile. Hopefully new and healthy friendships are nearby.
  • School Registration: Finalize school enrollment, and watch your children embrace new opportunities with enthusiasm.
  • Healthcare Providers: Find local healthcare providers, keeping your family’s health a priority.
  • Community Resources: Seek community resources with an open mind. You’ll find support and a sense of belonging.
  • Emergency Contacts: Compile a list of emergency contacts, creating a safety net for your family.
  • Budget Review: Adjust your budget with confidence. You’re adapting and thriving in this new environment.
  • Explore the Area: Explore the neighborhood with your children, turning each adventure into a memory to cherish.
  • School Supplies: Gather school supplies with anticipation for the learning and growth that lies ahead.
  • Establish Routines: Locate nearby stores and restaurants. You’re establishing new routines to enjoy in your new community.
  • Join Community Events: Participate in local events with confidence. You’re becoming an integral part of this vibrant community. Plan to enjoy your contributions to it.
  • Seek Support: Remember, seeking support is a sign of strength. Lean on local organizations, social services, or counseling when needed. You’re not alone on this journey. Maybe we can help you along your journey to Housing Stability
